Research Overview
Dr. Diamond is a cultural anthropologist whose research aims to reduce racial and gender disparities in health and strengthen communities through mixed-methods that include ethnography, social marketing for health promotion, arts-based interventions, and participatory action research. Her research interests cover the following topics: 1. internet-based interventions 2. social marketing and branding for health promotion 3. substance use, outcome expectancies and risky sexual behavior among urban youth; 4. the role of the media and entertainment business in youth cultural trends; 5. gender/power relations and risky sexual behavior. Dr. Diamond is currently Co-PI and Scientific Director of "Xperience," a CDC-funded drug prevention intervention study that involves youth performing artists in the creation of drug-free entertainment cds and live concerts. This innovative study utilizes techniques of social marketing and branding for drug prevention (www://Xperiencehartford.org). Dr. Diamond is also Co-PI of a NIDA-funded qualitative study concerning MDMA and STI/HIV risk among hidden networks of ecstasy users in Hartford (http://incommunityresearch.org/programs/mdma.htm). Past research projects include a mixed-methods epidemiological study of club drug use among 16-30 year olds in Hartford, and an ethnographic study of gender and sexual politics among marginalized folk artists in Southern India. Dr. Diamond is also involved with drug policy reform efforts in CT as a volunteer with the Clean Slate Committee and A Better Way Foundation.
