Research Overview
Marlene Berg’s research interest include: women and youth, most specifically substance abuse prevention, intimate partner violence, identity, cognitive and social development; research methods and participatory approaches to democratizing science. She has served as Principal Investigator and/or Project Director or on several CSAP-funded research and intervention studies including Youth Action Research for Prevention (YARP), a multi-level intervention designed to increase efficacy and empowerment and reduce substance and sex risk among urban youth; Urban Woman Against Substance Abuse (UWASA), a project for mothers and their preadolescent daughters; and Encontrando el Poder Dentro de Tí, a collaborative family strengthening project. She worked as a member of the research/training team on NIAAA funded study on Alcohol, Sex Risk and HIV in Mumbai, India (ASHRA). One of the co-founders of the Institute for Community Research, Berg has trained youth, youth workers, graduate students, teachers and community residents in participatory action research for over 20 years.
