Research Overview
I am a medical anthropologist with research interests in human reproduction, ecology, and ethnomedicine. My major research interests center on sexual and reproductive health issues among adolescents and young adults broadly constructed to include the related issues of gender, relationship violence, child abuse, substance use, and other risk-taking behaviors. I have done research on teenage pregnancy and parenting among Latinas in East Los Angeles, male involvement in reproductive health in the Philippines, and the fertility effects of warfare among the Waorani of Amazonian Ecuador.
My most recent research is funded by the Centers for Disease Control (10/03 - 9/08) and addresses the social context of sexual behavior, relationships, and communication patterns among African American and Puerto Rican young adults (18-25) in Hartford, CT and Philadelphia, PA. The qualitative-quantitative method mix will provide a grounded understanding of these topics from the perspective of the young people who will be targeted for a sexual risk reduction intervention promoting the use of barrier contraceptives. A second project is an exploratory study of sex scholars (high school and university students who have sex to earn money for tuition and school expenses) in Bohol, Philippines in collaboration with the University of Bohol.
