Research Overview
According to a survey of APA accredited graduate programs, 75% of these programs did not cover HIV/AIDS in their curricula. In 1995, I conducted a re-evaluation of graduate training of HIV/AIDS in psychology programs and found that there has been an overall improvement in graduate program training. In the future, I would like to examine HIV/AIDS knowledge of psychology faculty.
Very few sexually active college students report consistent use of condoms for sexual intercourse. When I conducted a research project on condom attitudes in two college samples, 35% of the respondents indicated that they never use a condom with their current partner. I am currently working with several colleagues to analyze the results of a qualitative survey on the reasons for not using condoms. I am also working on a structural equation model on variables that predict condom use.
There is conflicting evidence as to whether HIV/AIDS contributes to or exacerbates psychopathology. I conducted a study of men and women with HIV and AIDS using the MMPI-2 and the Health Locus of Control Scale. Pathology was found in individual cases, and levels of psychopathology were predicted by Locus of Control.
