Research Overview
Michelle Kaufman is primarily interested in STI/HIV prevention for underserved populations, particularly women of color and women in the developing world. Her research involves developing and testing STI/HIV and substance use prevention interventions that take into account gender issues, sexual relationship power, gender-based violence, and cultural context. In South Africa, she is currently directing a project testing an intervention for couples who frequent drinking establishments and are at high risk for HIV. In Nepal, she recently pilot-tested a sexual health education program for women living in Kathmandu as part of a Fulbright Fellowship. She hopes to return to Nepal in the near future to conduct a randomized controlled trial of her program. In the U.S., Michelle is working with African American teenage girls who have dropped out of school and are at high risk for STIs/HIV. She is also working with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America to develop a sexual health communication training for Big Brothers and Sisters.
